The psychiatrist may suggest that you see a therapist to work this out as well. You need some tools to help you work through your anxiety to help you avoid panic attacks. If you want to do it alone without medication, try Joe Barry’s Panic Away book as it’s worked for many people including myself. You could also see a therapist or get other support, but remember, you do not have to go through this alone. Find some good self help books and practice their suggested techniques.

Aerobic exercise helps deter panic attacks and so does sleeping eight hours a night. Sleeping in total darkness increases melatonin, your body’s natural way to help you rest. Medication and therapy are one of the best ways, at least initially; to treat the panic attacks depending on there severity. Deep breathing and relaxation techniques can help avoid panic attacks. Avoid caffeinated drinks.

It is pertinent to recognize what it is, while it is happening. If after you have tried these attacks and it continues do not run; try taking some slow deep breaths with your eyes closed. Recognize that your fearful thoughts are irrational and try to ride it out. Tell yourself “nothing bad is going to happen” You need to get rid of the fear and start living your life.

Do not avoid places where you have had a panic attack, this will only make you more anxious. The fear will accumulate and it can literally cut you off from everything. If you feel afraid to go anywhere because you might have an attack, this is leading to agoraphobia. I know how disabling it can be to live in fear, but you cannot lose hope and you must fight it.
